Region: The Great Plains Members: Sioux, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Kiowa, Blackfeet, Crow, Omaha, and Pawnee tribes Physical Features: The Great Plains is a wide flat expanse of land across the North American continent. It stretches from Texas to the northern part of Montana and up through Canada. The area is marked by rolling hills, rivers, and prairies with plenty of grass and wildlife. Weather: The climate of the Great Plains is mostly temperate, with cool summers and warm winters. During the summer months, temperatures can reach up to 100°F and can drop below 0°F in the winter. Natural Resources: The Great Plains had a wide variety of natural resources, including bison, deer, elk, game birds, waterfowl, fish, wild fruits, and nuts. Homes: Homes of the Great Plains were called teepees and were constructed of tanned bison hides and wooden poles. The structures were designed to be easily taken down and moved as the tribe followed buffalo herds. Clothing: Clothing of the Great Plains was made from animal hides and furs. Women typically wore dresses and leggings while men often wore breechcloths and moccasins. Arts & Crafts: The people of the Great Plains have a rich tradition of arts and crafts. The tribes created painting, beadwork, pottery, basket weaving, and even jewelry.
