Many workers around the world do not like the World Trade Organization (WTO) because it promotes policies that are seen as detrimental to poor countries. The WTO is seen as favoring the wealthy nations and multinational corporations, giving them more access to foreign markets and privileges than local companies and workers. The WTO is also seen as actively working against labor rights, environmental standards, and food safety standards, in favor of protecting the interests of those with more money. Furthermore, the WTO has the power to impose trade sanctions on countries that break the rules, which can be seen as a form of economic coercion. Finally, many workers see the WTO as a way for global corporations to reduce labor costs, often at the expense of local workers.
