I reach it and twist the knob, finding that it opens! I carefully peek around the corner to see if Darren is still there, but I don't see him, which gives me enough courage to walk out and find a safe place. I quickly look for a hiding spot and crawl under a bush. I lie still, listening to the sound of barking coming from the house and the street.
