Women have been playing an important role in Indian libraries since ancient times. Women have taken charge of many aspects of library management and service, such as cataloging, acquisitions, reference support, digital library access, and preserving and providing access to rare manuscripts. Women have also spearheaded initiatives to improve library infrastructure, such as the development of library networks, virtual reference services, digital library services and resource sharing. Women have also been instrumental in introducing new technologies and services to Indian libraries. In the recent past, women have become increasingly active in advocating for library services in the rural areas of India. They have also been instrumental in setting up literacy and resource centers in many rural areas, thus helping to open up access to information and resources to marginalized communities. Women have been active participants in library outreach activities and are increasingly taking on roles of leadership in the library and information sciences field in India.
