Wendy Brown (2015) argues that the new normative order of reason that became widely and deeply disseminated over three decades is neoliberalism. This is a political and economic ideology that emphasizes free market capitalism, deregulation, privatization, and individual responsibility. According to Brown, neoliberalism has become so pervasive that it has transformed the way we think about ourselves, our society, and our relationship to one another. It has also become deeply embedded in our political and cultural institutions, shaping everything from education and healthcare to the media and the arts. This has led to a growing sense of inequality, insecurity, and social fragmentation, as well as a sense of disillusionment with traditional politics and a growing cynicism about the ability of government to solve social problems.
