Water scarcity is a major issue in many parts of the world, particularly in developing countries. It is estimated that around 1.2 billion people, or nearly one fifth of the world’s population, do not have access to clean and safe drinking water. Poor water quality, limited access to sanitation, inadequate supplies of water, and over-exploitation of groundwater resources combine to make water a scarce resource in many places.
