Once upon a time in a small town lived a lively group of teenagers, all 17-year-olds with the exception of their charismatic friend, Connor. He was often seen in his favorite Bathing Ape shirt and stylishly ripped jeans, his cool aura enough to turn heads wherever he went. Unlike his brother and his gang, Mikey was the boy with greasy black hair, a pudgy build, and an oversize American Eagle shirt, often paired with baggy sweatpants. Driven by an interest in strange, fantastical stories and inspired by the works of H.P Lovecraft and Philip K. Dick, the group decided to build a machine that could swap minds. "Something to shake things up," they claimed and, despite the inherent risks, they completed it with the help of internet guides and a whole lot of duct tape. Once the machine was ready, the oldest and youngest among them were elected for the experiment. Mikey was beside himself with excitement, but the ever-cool Connor wore his nonchalance like a second skin. They stepped into the shoddily-but-impressively built contraption, every heart pounding with anticipation. A vague hum filled the room as the machine powered up. There was a blinding flash before an eerie silence took over. As their vision cleared, Connor and Mikey found themselves staring right at themselves. But something was different. They had swapped bodies. Mikey, now in Connor's body, stood taller and stronger. He touched his blonde hair and looked at his hands, bigger and rougher than the ones he'd held before. He relished the surprised looks from his brother's friends. Connor, in Mikey's body, felt an unfamiliar heaviness. His clothes didn't fit; they were tight and awkward. He ran his slightly chubby hand through greasy black hair, frowning at the reflection in a nearby mirror. Days turned into weeks, then months. Away from the constant expectation of attractiveness, he found joy in the simplest of things and used his newfound invisibility to explore and learn about the world around him. Ultimately, the swap became permanent, but the lessons they learned were profound and lifelong. Among looks and labels, their true strength was in their character and the bonds they'd formed with each other.
