Question: Write a story about a boy who was attending his older brother's wedding. He overhead his mother talking with his brother about the flowergirl being too sick that day and the bride worrying about it. The boy offers to be the flowergirl, and his older brother hugs him, telling him he's a great kid. His mother hustles him to a private room where she helps him out of his suit and into the tights, dress and shoes the flowergirl was going to wear. She even styled his hair and did a little bit of makeup for her son. The boy had a great time walking down the aisle and tossing the flower petals. After the wedding the bride thanked him for stepping in. The boy shrugged and spun in the dress, saying it was fun.
Matthew was buzzing with excitement as he entered the old church, clutching the hand of his mother. His older brother, Tom, was finally getting married, and the whole family seemed to float on laughter and anticipation. The bride’s side had brought a little girl to be the flowergirl, but Matthew kept hearing snippets about her being ill. Matthew tried not to eavesdrop, but as he snooped around the hallway, he overheard his mother talking to Tom in lowered voices. "The flowergirl’s mother just called. She’s too sick, Tom. Poor thing. Abby’s upset. What are we going to do?" Tom sighed, running a nervous hand through his hair. “I don’t want Abby worrying about this on our wedding day.” Matthew’s heart fluttered with a strange idea. He stepped forward before he could second-guess himself. “I could be the flowergirl,” he offered, his voice just above a whisper. His brother stared at him for a second, then grinned wide and scooped him into a hug. “You’re a great kid, Matty,” Tom whispered, ruffling his hair. Within minutes, Matthew’s mother hustled him down a maze of narrow halls into a spare room. She slipped him out of his little suit and helped him wriggle into the white tights first, then the soft layers of the flowergirl’s dress. “Hold still,” she told him as she brushed and pinned his hair, slipping in a flower clip that matched the bridal bouquet. She even dabbed a touch of blush on his cheeks and swept a pale color on his lips, making him giggle with delight. The bridesmaids squealed in support when he emerged, and the wedding planner showed Matthew how to slowly walk up the aisle and scatter flower petals from the basket. When the music began and the doors swung open, Matthew took a trembling breath—then stepped forward, petals swirling around him as he walked, proud and brave, all eyes on his beaming face. The guests smiled, some chuckled softly, and Abby, the bride, wiped away happy tears as she watched her soon-to-be brother-in-law. After the ceremony, photos were taken in the golden afternoon light. Matthew twirled in the dress, laughing as the skirt billowed around him. Abby knelt beside him, taking his hands. “Thank you, Matthew. You saved the day, and you were wonderful.” Matthew shrugged, grinning, and spun again. “It was fun! Can I keep the dress?” They all laughed, and Matthew, the unlikely flowergirl, felt like the luckiest kid in the world.
